Telecommunications 2000 Conference

The conference Telecommunications 2000 was held from 8 - 9 November in Portorož, Slovenia. It was one in a series of educational conferences organised by the Institute for Telecommunications. The conference aimed to bring closer to the general public those areas of telecommunications previously reserved mainly for experts and specialist workgroups. Those who attended the conference may, of course judge, for themselves whether this aim was accomplished or not.

Telecommunications 2000 Conference
Porotorož, Grand Hotel Emona, November 8 – 9, 2000

From 8 to 9 November 2000 in the Slovenian resort town of Portorož the Institute for Telecommunications and the Mobinet magazine hosted the first international conference Telecommunications 2000.
The aim of the conference was to encompass every field of telecommunications, provide an overview of the current situation and predict trends. We did not focus on theoretical expertise but sought to bring the theory close to lay people. Judging from the feedback of the 210 participants, we achieved our goals.
The two-day event involved 33 lectures by Slovenian and foreign speakers. The programme was divided into several lecture themes: fixed telephony, mobile telephony, telecommunications application, standardisation, communications via satellite, and communications via the Internet.
The highlight of the event was certainly the lecture by Dr Bernd Eylert, UMTS Forum Chairman. His lecture was dedicated to introducing the forum but he also expressed his joy at meeting new colleagues and partners wanting to participate in the UMTS Forum. The discussion following his lecture was probably too short for some because it only gave a few answers to the question of GSM’s future. Mr Eylert stressed that the current systems, when revitalised and combined with the UMTS system, have great potential and that their future is safe for quite some time. There are mainly two reasons for this: first of all, providers have paid for a 20-year concession so it is in their interest to make further investments into network services and capabilities. Secondly, the UMTS will enable greater data transfer speed (the average user will probably be satisfied with GPRS data transfer speed) but, more importantly, GPRS will not be able to compete with UMTS when it comes to other issues.
