Seminar on Radiocommunications 2006

Superstitious would say that luckily 13th Radiocommunications seminar has finished. We could add, very successfully.

The seminar was held from 31 May to 2 June 2006 in the Mercurius Congress Centre in Ljubljana. The main topic this year was 'Terrestrial Communications on High Frequencies', including wireless (satellite) systems, WiMAX and Thermography.

Report

RADIOCOMMUNICATIONS 2006
Ljubljana, Mercurius Congress Centre, 31 May-2 June 2006

The first day of lectures started with a presentation of Mr. Miran Kimovec. He introduced a new European Directive on Data Retention. Silvester Staric then presented new radio technologies. This lecture was a good introduction to the lectures that have followed in the next few days. After very interesting lecture of professor Jožko Budin, who introduced thermal radiation and noises in radio communications, a number of lectures about MMDS (Multipoint Microwave Distribution System) were given.

In the morning section of the second day we heard lectures on WiMAX technology and its application in practice, test results and economic efficiency. Mr. Bozo Misovic spoke about HSxPA technology which will be intorduced by the end of 2006. The afternoon section was intended for Thermography. Mr. Nikolaj Trsan gave an introductory lecture. Mr. Trsan is one of the leading experts on Thermovision in Slovenia. After taht, short lectures from the application part of Thermography (Industry and Construction, Transmission of Electrical Energy, Medicine, the Army, the Police) were given. In front of the Congress Centre a van equiped with thermovision and other cameras was parked. The participants could see a practical demonstration. After the lectures we went to Lesce Airport, where the Flayom company has its headquarters. Mr. Roman Bernard, CEO, showed us a helicopter equipped with thermovision and other cameras. They use such cameras for airborne inspections of power lines, gas lines etc. We concluded this very exciting and tiring day with a pleasant dinner at the Lectar restaurant in Radovljica.

The third day of the seminar we started with the lecture by Mr. Jim Boucher, who introduced the European Satellite Navigation System GALILEO. His excellent lecture gave some new ideas to the participants. More lectures about GPS in archeology, DVB-H and 3G, finding faults with antennas on high-voltage devices and Slovenian expressions in radio technique followed. The last lecturer came from Mr. Mark Leckenby from Australia. He spoke about a Precautionary Approach to Radio Communications Deployment - a case study from Australia.

25 lecturers and some 140 audience members participated at the Radiocommunications 2006 seminar.

We should also express our gratitude to our sponsors and exhibitors for their participation at the seminar. These include Telsima, Mobitel, Flycom, Stelkom, Icomms, Siol, Dat-Con, Avektis, Belmet and Kompas Telekomunikacije.

Many thanks to all the participants, listeners, lecturers, sponsors, exhibitors and everyone else who somehow participated in the Radiocommunications 2006 seminar. See you all next year!
