Electromagnetic radiaton

Electromagnetic radiation is phenomenon known and exploited for over 100 years. The benefits of electromagnetic radiation from several sources are well known, from everyday communication via mobile phones to cooking food in a microwave oven. In certain circumstances, electromagnetic radiation can also have some side effects. To avoid side effects, measures are in place and the owners and users of sources of electromagnetic radiation should be aware of them.

Experts at the Institute for Telecommunications are willing to help when you are collecting papers for building a new site involving RF sources or when you have some uncertainty concerning the work place. The Institute can also help if you are merely a citizen with an antenna mast in your vicinity and are concerned about possible radiation.

LABORATORY OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION

The Laboratory of electromagnetic radiation (EMR Department) is managed by Rok Pirnat. The department co-operates with a number of telecommunications specialists in Slovenia and abroad. Regarding EMR measurements, we have all the required permits issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.

For more information, write to rok.pirnat@i-tk.org or telephone +386 1 422 84 26.

Since we specialise in EMR fields we can answer many of your questions.

The EMR Department was established to help regulate the field of EMR in Slovenia. The key activities of the EMR Department are as follows: consultancy work regarding EMR, EMR measurements, prediction and calculation of EMR, preparing final reports on human exposure to EMR, publications and lecturing.
Our main activity is making initial measurements of every new LF or RF source. Measurements are required pursuant to a Slovenian decree. We are also able to calculate worst-case scenarios for end-users. We can prepare an official report for every calculation and measurement of a given RF source.

ABOUT MEASUREMENTS

We measure the radiation involved in human exposure to electromagnetic fields for low frequencies (LF) (0 Hz to 10 kHz) and high frequencies (HF) (10 kHz to 300 GHz). The best known LF sources are: high-voltage transformers, overground and underground power lines, ... HF sources are as follows: mobile phones, base stations, radio and television broadcasting stations. The police, the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia, Slovenian Railways and the Ministry of Defence use other less known HF sources.

Our Institute uses calibrated instruments for narrowband and broadband measurements and all kinds of antenna for such measurements.

At the Institute we also possess software able to calculate the radiation patterns stemming from different HF sources at one location. Using this programme we are able to predict the worst-case scenario (hazard zone) regarding human exposure to EMR for every HF source and clusters of sources.

So should you have any questions regarding EMR, the Institute for Telecommunications is here to help you.
